More About Proud Schools Project:
Schools in rural areas face many challenges, including poor facilities, lack of maintenance, and a shortage of water. Despite such obstacles, many teachers are dedicated to making a difference and creating a better learning environment for their pupils.
The aims of the Proud Schools Project (PSP) are twofold.
1. Tourism Awareness.
The children are made aware of the concept of tourism and the possible future jobs available, are taught how to behave towards tourists and given skills such as map-reading and budgeting.
2. Environmental sensitivity.
The children are taught to have pride in their schools, have a recycling programme where possible, grow flowers and keep the grounds neat, as well as establishing a vegetable garden both to supplement their diet and are encouraged to grow vegetables at home.
Via an international project they become an Eco-School and can achieve the prestigious Eco-Flag.
The aim is that pupils carry these principles into their adult lives, benefitting themselves and society.
Presently, ten schools are part of this project.
Last year new water-tanks were installed, guttering and pipes were repaired, and lockable taps were installed to conserve water. Roofs and a number of classrooms were repainted. The schools received trees and other plants, mostly indigenous, to generally uplift the school grounds. Assistance was also available with regards their Eco Projects.
The needs of each school are assessed and money is budgeted accordingly, but, regretfully, through no fault of the project, Drakensberg Experience’s previous funders are now directing all their funding efforts towards tertiary education within the civil engineering field. The project has made tremendous progress in the few short years and it will be a tragedy should we not be able to continue assisting our rural schools going forward. Our 2015 budget was only R150,000.00 so we appeal for donations to help us keep this very worthwhile project alive.
Payments should be made directly into the following numbered account and we are in the process of registering PSP as a Non-Profit Organization (NPO) and obtaining an 18A certificate from SARS. All accounts are audited by Spence and Hefer Chartered Accountants in Estcourt and all spending is with the prior approval of the Drakensberg Experience steering committee. All donors will be welcome to visit the schools, by prior arrangement with Dolly, to see the difference their generosity is making in these children’s lives and receive regular e-mail updates should they so wish.
